Read Story So Far

Into the Deep Catacombs...

Ah, hello there young neopet! I see you have come for a story. We have many stories here, many tales to be told and read. Look around at these shelves, and delve into as many books as you want. I guarantee there will always be more than you could possibly imagine.

Go on, don't be shy! Look, they're even divided by type of story. Over here, I have adventure stories. If you're looking for romance, try that shelf. Oh, and don't forget the biographies.

If you're looking for history, we have that, too. I'm afraid that much of our source material is in storage, but you can enter that through the side door over there.

Chosen Option: Browse the adventure stories

Did anyone say boo?

You wander over to the shelves holding the adventure stories. A quick scan confirms the librarian's assertion. All sorts of spine-tingling adventures await!

You mull over which story to start reading. There's several stories with the usual sorts of dangers in them- The Esophagor, the Ghost Lupe, and other spooks. Then there's stories of pet-eating cannibals on Mystery Island, spooky tombs in the Lost Desert, lost caverns of ice in Terror Mountain...

The list goes on and on, and so does the clock as you enjoy looking through the options. Better make a decision as to which story you want to read, and ignore those shadows moving in the corner.

Chosen Option: Search the Catalog

Look, a Computer!

Who knew this musty old place had computers? Anyway, it's opened up in the library catalog.

For a moment your mind is blank, staring at the computer screen and the six options, trying to ignore the shadows.

You first look up all your faviorite authors, but sadly all of those books are either checked out or ones you've already read. Then you test out the "Pick a Random Book" option, but none of the titles selected interests you. Maybe you should try some of the books your friend recommended the other day.

A mysterious window on the computer screen pops up out of nowhere. You see a face on the window, and the cheap, barely-audible speakers of the computer say something.

Chosen Option: "I was born on...."

Huh? What's that?

"I was born on a foggy morning in the buxxbxzzzbuuz..."

You lean forward, trying to make out the words within the staticky recording- or whatever it is. The face itself seems to be getting clearer and your eyes pop at the strung out and pleading look on the wocky's face. It looks half starved, maybe even beaten, and the wierdest part is that something seems to be glinting metallically next to one eye.

A scaly paw descends on your shoulder and you jump back. The librarian leans over you and snaps the computer off.

"I'm very sorry, my young friend, but that terminal isn't working right. It seems to have some sort of virus on it. You'll find our real catalog over there."

He points towards an alcove and you realize the walls of it are really the drawers of the old card catalog system. You look back to find him staring at you expectantly. "Uh... ok." You get up and obediently head towards the nook. Once there, you look back to see the last of him as he heads back to the desk.

For a few minutes you stare at the card catalog, trying to decide what to do. Somehow, the idea of a book isn't as appealing any more. You can't forget that look you saw on the wocky's face. And the librarian interrupting you that way just doesn't seem right. He almost acts like he's hiding something... but what?

Chosen Option: Search the Card Catalog

Maybe the computer catalog is inaccurate?

There's no harm in looking at the cards are there? You've never used on in your life, but it shouldn't be hard, should it?

Hmmmm, there are different sections divided by handfuls of letters. What could they mean? The only way you find out is by opening it up.

The section 'Mo - Ni' is right in your face, so you pull it out. The fist card is

Moasam, Tlute

The Current's Ways - FICTION

A story about a young flotsam who is orphaned at a young age and must search the ocean for to discover the truth about life through the Neopian ocean.

Hmmm, this is like random search. You move on to the next title.

Moaka, Fredrick

How I Saved Neopia - FICTION

The story told by a young fire shoyru who is summoned by the faerie queen to save Neopia from the forces of the vile Dr. Frank Sloth. Sequel to How Come the Faerie Queen Didn't Save Neopia

Where have you heard that story before? Next.

Moeyoe's Sea - FICTION

by Cassandra Krawkina

The story of Moeyoe who grows up in her house by the sea. Prequel to Warm Shores, Warm Hearts

Bah! The most boring one yet. Should you just give up?

Chosen Option: Slam the Section Shut

Hm...whats this?

You slam the card catalog shut in disgust. It makes a loud BANG and the Techo librarian glares at you for disturbing the quiet. A bit of dust flies up off the card catalog, and an odd looking paper falls off and goes fluttering to the ground.

After apoligizing to the librarian, you bend down to pick up the piece of paper. As you touch it, you feel a faint shock, like when someone jolts you with static electricity. You pick it up and examine it. On one side, it looks exactly like a paper floppy disk, and on the other side, it looks like a card from the catalog.

Now that can't be right, you think to yourself. A floppy disk isn't the same shape as a card from the catalog! Yet somehow, no matter how many times you turn the card over, its always a floppy disk on one side and a card from the catalog on the other.

You read what it says on the catalog card side:

Jawnobe, Frederick

Computing for Wockys - SELF HELP

What to do if your computer freezes, how to use the Internet, how to cope if your computer spontaneously compusts, and many more questions are answered in this self-help book by the famous Frederick Jawnobe. Written especially for a Wocky's use, although can be used by any other species as well - including humans!
Famous, huh?
you think to yourself. Can't say I've heard the name 'Jawnobe' before. You turn the card over to the floppy disk side.

There is something written in the worst handwriting you can imagine on the paper disk's label. By squinting and moving the card alternately close to you and far away, you can make out the first few words: "I was born on a foggy morning in the..." followed by a scribble that you can't make heads or tails of.

What should you do with your strange and unexpected new find?

Chosen Option: Put it in the catalogue computer, of course!

The disk goes *Click* as the drive starts reading...

You wait patiently as the computer loads the disk you've just inserted into the floppy disk slot. You're a little surprised the computer still treats it like a disk, what with that card from the catalogue stuck to the back, but you'd believed it was worth a try anyway.

The little green light on the computer stops blinking, and the whirring sound quits. There is a deep silence for a moment, followed by an unearthly buzzing sound. "Wha-?" you exclaim intelligently, until you see the silver face on the screen has reappeared. As you watch, the Wocky begins to speak.

"I was born on a foggy morning in the middle of Neopia Central; because I showed much aptitude with electronics at a young age and my family needed the money, I was soon apprenticed to an Elephante by the name of... no, I won't say. However, I discovered soon off that this scheming boss of mine wasn't just a simple computer salesman - no, he was determined to create a superintelligent computer, though why he wanted to do so, he never said. As days and weeks went on, he became increasingly obsessed with this project; what had started out as innocent sketching and daydreaming for him soon became a raging passion. His life revolved around that computer and what he called a way to unlock the secrets of the mind, to make a computer think and act like a real person.

"I can still remember that day as if it were yesterday; I got into a huge fight with my boss - I believed we were spending too much time and money on this super-AI project of his, but he insisted that it was necessary for his "plans." He gave me a list of instructions to complete the computer, and I finally gave in, deciding it was easier to just build it instead of fighting him; if it didn't work, perhaps he would return to a more rational state of sanity.

"With that decided, I say down at a lab table, surrounded by bits of half-welded metal, wires, and screws, patiently following the instructions on the sheet. As I was completing the third step, the computer suddenly turned on. Not suspecting anything, I reached over and hit the button to turn it off... and the next thing I knew, I was looking at you, here and now."

You look at the face staring out at you from the depths of the screen. The fur on your back stands on end as you stare into its sunken eyes, eyes that seem to be pleading with you to do something, anything! You...
